Real Madrid defender Pepe says he would sign Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan and Porto midfielder Fernando if he were in charge of the Spanish outfit.

The Portugal international has been impressed by the duo, who currently play their domestic football in his adopted homeland - Pepe is a Brazilian born Portuguese.

"Who I would sign if I were Real Madrid president? I really like Gaitan. He has a lot of creativity and has the quality to play for a club like Real Madrid," Pepe told O Jogo.

"Another player who I really like is Porto's Fernando. He has the quality to play for Madrid, too. So those are the two players I'd bring to the club."

Benfica's Gaitan is a name being linked with several of Europe's top clubs lately. The Argentina international has shone in the UEFA Champions League group stages this season, leading tospeculation that Manchester United and Barcelona will try and sign the player in the winter transfer window.

Gaitan currently leads the Champions League charts with four assists this season, and signed a one-year contract extension with Benfica last month.

Pepe also rates Porto playmaker Joao Moutinho very highly, but concedes that Madrid already have Mesut Ozil in his position.

"Joao Moutinho is a great player as well and has a lot to give to Porto and Portuguese football," he said.

"I don't see him at Madrid, though, because we already have Ozil."

Madrid head to Sporting Gijon on Saturday three points clear of rivals Barcelona in La Liga with a game in hand.
